THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

baptism of the lordThe Baptism of Christ was originally celebrated on Epiphany, which commemorated three events: the arrival of the Magi (the wise men), Jesus’ baptism and the wedding in Cana,
where Jesus turned the water into wine. Over time, the Baptism of the Lord feast was separated from the other events of Epiphany. The Baptism of the Lord feast is observed on the first Sunday after Epiphany……

‘MY FAVOUR RESTS ON YOU.’ Through baptism we are members of Christ’s body. God says to us: ‘You are my beloved son/daughter; my favour rests on you.’

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

epiphanyTHEY OFFERED HIM GIFTS. For some Christians the feast of the Epiphany is the day on which gifts are exchanged. As we observe the wise men opening their treasures in today’s Gospel and offering gifts to Jesus, we can ask: what precious gifts can we offer to Jesus today? We may not have gold, frankincense and myrrh but we have our love, our fidelity, our time. We can give these to Jesus by giving them to those in need.
